Risperdal (risperidone) For Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Risperdal (risperidone) a prescription strength medication, and an antipsychotic drug used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder, manic depression, schizophrenia, and sometimes used for treatment of irritability in children with autism. It is best to note that it is not used to treat other psychotic conditions such as dementia since it may cause pneumonia, heart failure or worst; sudden death.

This medication is available is tablet and oral liquid formula. The tablet is a rapidly disintegrating tablet called RISPERDAL M-TAB. It also comes in variety of formulas and dosage strengths. (The tab comes in 5 strengths while the oral liquid formula comes in 6 different strengths.

Adverse or side effects of taking Risperdal can be classified into two, the less serious and the serious side effects. For the less serious side effects patients may have:

Stiff muscles, confusion, excessive sweating, palpitations, tremor, trouble swallowing, fainting spells and restless muscle movements specifically in the eyes, neck, jaw or tongue

Patients who experience the above conditions should contact their health care provider immediately. Allergic reactions should also be brought to a medical expert's attention. Signs of allergic reaction may include: swelling of the face, throat, lips or tongue, appearance of hives as well as difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy Warnings:

Pregnant women or those planning on getting pregnant should consult with their doctors first before taking this medication. It is not known whether this medication is harmful to an unborn baby. Risperdal is rated FDA pregnancy category C.

Dosage:

Risperdal dosage may vary from each patient so it is best to follow a doctor's prescription. Keep the tablet inside the blister pack to avoid damage. For the disintegrating tablet, allow it to dissolve completely inside the mouth. Don't chew. Drink water after the whole tablet has already disintegrated. For the oral solution, use a special dose-measuring cup or spoon. Never mix with cola, tea or any other drinks.

While you are taking Risperdal avoid drinking alcohol since it may increase some of the side effects of the drug. Drink plenty of fluids since risperidone makes you more susceptible to dehydration or you may feel overheated. The drug is also known to impair your nerve reactions and your thinking so it is best not to drive or involve in activities that require quick and alert thinking.

There are several things that you and your doctor should talk about prior to taking in Risperdal. Over dosage or misuse of this drug may be life-threatening.
