Muscle Relaxer Medication

A muscle relaxer belongs to a group of drugs that are usually prescribed to relieve muscle spasms and pain due to muscle injury. It is often prescribed as an aid in physical therapy. There are different kinds of relaxers that are prescribed according to the severity of the pain involved. There are even relaxers that cause temporary paralysis by blocking the transmission of nervous signals. These types of relaxers are used when your doctor has to perform extensive surgery. Less serious cases like sprains or common back pain require milder forms of muscle relaxants.

Drowsiness, blurred vision, urine discoloration and inability to focus are just some of the side effects that are commonly associated with a muscle relaxer. There is also the possibility of becoming dependent on the drug with prolonged use and of experiencing some respiratory problems. To avoid drug dependency, be sure to follow prescription instructions strictly. And if you begin having breathing difficulties, contact your doctor immediately.

Furthermore, never forget that the medication is prescribed specifically to mask the pain that your injury brings. So just because you no longer feel the pain, it doesn't mean that your injury has healed. You may wrongly assume that you are already well enough to resume normal activities. The need to be very careful cannot be emphasized enough at this point. The relaxant is meant to make you feel better, but your doctor is the only one who can rightly tell when you are completely healed and can freely move around again.

More importantly, you will have to inform your doctor if you are taking any other form of medication, whether they are common vitamins or any other form of drug. A muscle relaxer may not interact well with other chemical structures, which is why your doctor needs to know what other drugs you are taking. This possibility of negative chemical interaction also means that you will have to lay off alcohol while under medication.
