Metformin hcl (Metformin Hydrochloride)
Metformine, Metaformin, Metforman?
Metformin hcl or Metformin Hydrochloride is a generic form of the brand name drugs, Fortamet, Glucophage or Glucophage XR and others. It is an oral diabetes medication which is used to treat Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. It may be used in conjunction with other diabetes medications or with insulin, depending on your specific needs. Recent evidence also indicates a new potential use for Metformin weight loss -- as the drug has an appetite suppressant effect in people who do not have diabetes. Common and often misspellings this drug are: Metformine, Metaformin, Metforman
When discussing diabetes treatment with your doctor it's important they know whether you have any other medical conditions, or are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications (including vitamins or herbal supplements). This is particularly important if you have a family history of heart disease, or if you have liver or kidney disease. Note that there is a long list of medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, which can affect how Metformin hcl or Metformin Hydrochloride works in your body, so it is vital that your doctor know of any other drug you are taking.
There are some potentially serious Metformin side effects and dangerous symptoms which may occur while taking the drug. It's vital to watch out for these and seek medical attention immediately if they occur.
The first group of Metformin side effects is caused by a condition called lactic acidosis. This occurs rarely in people taking Metformin hcl, and it is a life-threatening condition. If you experience symptoms of weakness, sleepiness, slow heart rate, muscle pain, cold feeling, stomach pain, light-headedness, or fainting, you may have lactic acidosis, and should seek emergency medical treatment immediately.
Other serious Metformin side effects include shortness of breath, rapid weight gain or swelling, and flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches, or chills.
Less serious Metformin side effects include muscle pain or headache, weakness, or mild nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. Any persistent or uncomfortable symptoms can be discussed with your doctor, to determine how to best alleviate them.
Finally, it's important to know the symptoms and signs of severely low blood sugar, as the condition can be fatal if not treated. When taking Metformin hcl (Metformin Hydrochloride) you should keep a source of sugar with you at all times to prevent dangerously low blood sugar levels as low blood sugar can result to severe Metformin side effects. Again, this medication is often misspelled as: Metformine, Metaformin, or Metforman
