Desloratadine - For Treatment of Allergies
Desloratadine or Clarinex is an oral drug used for the treatment of allergies. It is similar to Claritin or Loratidine only that Desloratadine is a long acting anti-histamine that is commonly used for the treatment of al;lergic symptomatic reactions such as itchiness, swelling of the nose, sneezing and runny eyes. It is a prescription drug that is available in tablet or syrup form and is usually given to children of 12 years and above as well as for adults. Because Desloratadine is slow to enter the blood stream and the brain, it thus causes less drowsiness which is common in other anti-histamine drugs that are available in the market today. Examples of Desloratadine drugs that are out in the market right now are Zyrtec and Claritin. The common dosage given to children over 12 years of age and adults is 5mg and the syrup depending on the child's age if he is below 12.
Desloratadine was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration back in 2001. This drug produces the same results as that of loratadine although there are a majority of patients now who prefer the use of desloratadine over loratadine as they say it is more effective and causes less drowsiness especially when at work. When it comes to the effectiveness, tolerability safety and price use of this drug, most patients agree that desloratadine is better than loratadine.
This drug can be taken with or without food and has not yet been used or tested on pregnant women so it best to ask a doctor before taking it. Breastfeeding women should also take this drug with caution as desloratadine is passed into the breastmilk. Lactating mothers should first consult with ther pediatrician or ob-gynecologist before using this anti-histamine. Common side effects of taking desloratadine are the following: dry or sore throat, headache, sleepiness and fatigue.
