Avandia (Rosiglitazone maleate) the Type 2 Diabetes Treatment Medicine
Avandia (Rosiglitazone maleate) is an oral prescription antidiabetes agent which falls under the Generic name of Rosiglitazone. Thiazolidinedione is also part of this big family of generics used to fight Diabetes. Its' primary goal is to increase insulin sensitivity by making sure that the blood turns more reactive to Insulin and reduces glucose, fatty acid, and insulin blood concentrations.
Primary Uses:
This medication is prescribed for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus II.
Other uses of Avandia:
Treatment for Ulcerative colitis or ulcers in the large intestines and colon is still under way through research.
Rosiglitazone is for type 2 diabetes treatment only, and should not be used at all to treat type 1 diabetes.

- Short of Breath
- Swelling or Bloating
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Bleeding
- Mild Diarrhea
- Back Pain
- Sneezing or Running Nose
- Low Fever
- Loss of Appetite
- Clay-Colored Stools
- Blurred Vision
- Frequent Urination
- Frequently getting Hungry or Thirsty
- Bruising or Bleeding easily
Less Serious Side Effects:
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Back Pain
- Mild Stomach Pain
- Slowly Losing or Gaining Weight
Should the patient develop hives or vomits persistently, immediately call your Physician for first aid treatment or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
Withdrawals:
In the case of drug addiction when taken for a short period of time, no reports of withdrawals have been submitted. However, if you noticed any possible withdrawals in the case of discontinuation of this medication, report the conditions to your doctor or health care professionals right away.
Dosage of Avandia:
- 2mg, 4mg and 8mg in tablet form
- To be taken 1x a day on a full stomach or empty stomach
- May or may not be teamed up with Metformin, another anti-Diabetes medication
This medication can be taken with or without food. Morning and evening are the recommended time to take this drug.
What to avoid if you're taking Avandia:
- Rifampin - reduces blood concentration thus increase liver breakdown
- Steroids
- Thyroid medications
- Anti-Seizure medications
- Anti-Asthma medications
- Diet Pills
- Birth Control medications
- Aspirin-related medications
- Other beta-blocker medications
Warnings:
Dose adjustment may be required if you have the following conditions while taking Rosiglitazone: Tell your doctor if you have:
Liver disease, congestive heart failure or heart disease, history of stroke or heart attack, have developed eye problem due to diabetes.
The risk of developing hypoglycemia is likely, if you are drinking alcohol while taking this medication. Avoid all alcohol while use this drug.
Avandia is FDA pregnancy category C rated medication. It may be harmful to an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you're pregnant or plan on being pregnant for you take this medicine. The effect of this drug to breast milk is unknown, therefore talk to your doctor before you use this medicine, if you're nursing, because this medication could pass into the breast milk and harm your baby.
This drug is also known to induce menstrual periods on some women even after they have passed their natural menstrual periods. Women are advised to talk to their doctors to see if they may need birth control before taking this medicine.
Rosiglitazone may cause bone fractures, mostly in women. Talk to your immediately if you experienced any fractures while taking this drug.
It is but necessary to inform your Physician if you're using several other medications for the treatment of other medical conditions. This drug may be lowered in dosage to allow the intake of other drugs without further contradictions.
