Antihistamine - A Defense against the Body's Natural Defense
Antihistamine or histamine blockers are mainly used to fight allergies and skin irritation brought about by various allergic reactions. Histamine production is a natural defense mechanism by the body's immune system. This is characterized by the system's reaction to foreign compounds, chemicals and other substances which enters the body. As a natural form of defense, the body creates chemical called histamine. In effect, the area where the foreign substance or germ has entered becomes the site of infection. It manifests redness, itching and swollen areas.
The most common uses for Antihistamine are for treating hay fever, allergic reactions and skin irritations. Common symptoms of allergic reactions would include itching, skin blotches and inflammation, redness, sneezing, red and itchy eyes, coughing and in sever cases, inflammation of the throat which may lead to anaphylactic shock.
The diagnosis of an individual's allergies is determined by an allergenist or by other medical experts. These are then treated accordingly with a variety of allergy medication. These come in different forms such as tablets, pills, capsules, creams, ointments, syrups, drops, lotions, injections and sprays.
There are cases where Antihistamine medications may in fact cause nausea or drowsiness. This kind of medication should be taken with great caution and an individual is not advised to travel, drive or operate any machinery on their own while under treatment. There are some newer forms of this medication which do not give an individual a feeling of sleepiness. This is a more suitable treatment for those who need to be constantly on the go as part of their daily lives. The form of histamine blockers prescribed varies from person to person; there are some who would be prescribed with something topical while there are others who require carrying an injectable type with them at all times. The various side effects brought about by this drug can be discussed with a doctor prior to its use.
